An ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation certificate will show potential customers that your laboratory values quality and that you have taken steps to ensure that your calibration or testing results are accurate and reliable. ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is available for both freestanding laboratories and for laboratories which are part of larger facilities. ISO/IEC 17025 is not intended to be used as the basis for certification of laboratories. Compliance with regulatory and safety requirements on the operation of laboratories is not covered by ISO.
Commitment to quality versus actual value
Consider ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation as a third-party validation of a laboratory’s level of proficiency and commitment to quality. Because this heightens a customer’s confidence in the specialty gases they purchase, in some industries, due to process specifications or other issues, use of 17025 products is mandatory. Few would argue that any measure that increases quality can be anything less than beneficial regardless of application.
However, since most specialty gas suppliers maintain ISO/IEC 17025 certified laboratories, do not be misled into thinking the gases they produce are equal. First, accreditation is often product specific so it may apply to one particular product such as environmental mixtures, but not to other products. Second, while ISO/IEC 17025 seeks to establish a global level of competency in the lab, it does not speak to many other factors that directly affect a company’s ability to manufacture a broad line of well characterized and often unique products that provide better value when compared to similar products.
ISO/IEC 17025 is a company level accreditation based on a standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) titled 'General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories'. ISO/IEC 17025 is a general umbrella term used to refer to the specific standard; the current version of this standard is ISO/IEC 17025:2005. The standard contains two main sections: management requirements (primarily related to the operation and effectiveness of the quality management system within the laboratory) and technical requirements (primarily related to the competence of staff and calibration of equipment). The standard also gives requirements related to quality management such as document control and corrective action. This standard is the basis for accreditation from an accrediting body. This accreditation is specific to a scope. This accreditation is intended for all organizations performing tests and/or calibration, including first-, second- and third-party laboratories and laboratories where testing and/or calibration forms part of inspection and product certification.
